Signs You Need a Consumer Unit Upgrade

Modern RCD-protected consumer unit installed by Worsdale Electrical

The consumer unit, still called the fuse box by most people, is the single most important safety device in your home's electrics. It controls every circuit and is the thing that disconnects the power when something goes wrong. If yours is old, it may not do that job quickly enough to protect you. This guide explains how to tell when a consumer unit has had its day and what a modern replacement actually changes.

What a Consumer Unit Does

Every circuit in your home, sockets, lighting, the cooker, the shower, runs through the consumer unit. Its job is to cut the power fast if a fault could cause a fire or an electric shock. Older boards do this far more slowly than modern ones, and some do not protect against shock at all.

Signs Yours Needs Upgrading

  • Rewireable fuses: If you have to replace fuse wire rather than flick a switch back on, the board is decades old and well behind current standards.
  • No RCD protection: If there is no test button on the board, it almost certainly has no RCD protection, which is the part that protects against electric shock.
  • Age: A board more than 20 to 25 years old predates several wiring regulation updates and is worth assessing.
  • A wooden or metal box with no labelling: Older boards are often unlabelled, which makes safe isolation harder and points to an installation that has not been updated.
  • Nuisance tripping or scorching: Repeated tripping, a burning smell, or any discolouration around the board needs looking at straight away.

What an Upgrade Actually Changes

A modern consumer unit uses RCD or RCBO protection on circuits, which disconnects the supply in a fraction of a second if it detects a dangerous fault. It is clearly labelled, housed in a non-combustible enclosure, and tested in full so you have proof it works.

  • Faster, safer disconnection if a fault could cause a shock or fire.
  • Per-circuit protection with RCBOs, so a fault on one circuit does not knock out the whole house.
  • Clear labelling so circuits can be isolated safely.
  • An Electrical Installation Certificate registered with NAPIT for insurers, landlords or a future sale.

What to Expect on the Day

A straightforward replacement is usually completed within a day. Jake assesses the existing board and the circuits it feeds, explains the work and the price before starting, and keeps you informed about how long the power needs to be off. Every circuit is tested before and after the change, and the area is left clean and tidy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my board has RCD protection?

An RCD has a test button marked T or Test. If there is no test button anywhere on the board, it almost certainly has no RCD protection and is worth upgrading.

How long will my power be off?

The power needs to be off for parts of the job, but Jake plans it to keep disruption down and will tell you in advance roughly how long to expect.

Will I get paperwork?

Yes. You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate registered with NAPIT, which is useful for insurers, landlords and any future house sale.

Does an old board always need replacing?

Not always. Age alone is not a reason to replace if the installation is otherwise sound. Jake will give you an honest assessment rather than upselling unnecessary work.
